Roberta Vinci

No result in the sport is stranger to say out loud than this one: unseeded, ranked 43rd, Roberta Vinci beat Serena Williams 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the 2015 US Open semifinal, at 32, to end a calendar-year Grand Slam bid one match from completion. She had never taken a set off Williams before. The slice backhand that made her a nuisance for a decade suddenly looked like a plan, drawing errors from the best player alive. She lost the all-Italian final the next day to Flavia Pennetta, but New York still defines her.

It was not the whole story. Vinci reached a career-high of world No. 7 in singles the following spring, built on a one-handed backhand and a feel for angles that outlasted bigger hitters. In doubles with Sara Errani she won five major titles from 2012 to 2014, a career Grand Slam, and topped the doubles rankings herself. She closed her career at home, a wildcard loss in Rome in May 2018, applauded off a court she had worked for nineteen years.
