Simona Halep

Simona Halep built her game on legs and refusal, covering the baseline relentlessly and turning defence into attack until opponents cracked. Three major finals slipped away first: Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros in 2014, Jelena Ostapenko there in 2017, Caroline Wozniacki in Melbourne in 2018. The breakthrough came at Roland Garros in 2018, from a set down against Sloane Stephens, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. A year later she beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in a 56-minute Wimbledon final, with three unforced errors.

The Romanian spent 64 weeks at world No. 1, finished 2017 and 2018 on top, and gathered 2 majors and 24 career titles. The record carries a rupture: a positive test for roxadustat at the 2022 US Open brought a provisional suspension and a four-year ban, cut to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in March 2024, which ruled the violation unintentional. She returned, but the body would not follow; in February 2025, at 33, she said goodbye at home, at the Transylvania Open in Cluj.
