Romanian tennis, a short history
The men's heritage rests on one giant. Ilie Nastase won 2 Grand Slam singles titles, Roland Garros 1973 and the US Open 1972, reached three more major finals across Wimbledon and Paris, and in 1973 became the first official ATP world number 1. His 66 tour-level titles still tower over Romanian men's tennis.
The women have the deeper modern record. Simona Halep won Roland Garros 2018 and Wimbledon 2019, reached three further Slam finals, and spent 64 weeks at world number 1. Virginia Ruzici took Roland Garros 1978, and Florenta Mihai reached the 1977 Paris final, a clay-court line that runs through to Irina Spirlea and her US Open 1997 semifinal.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
