Flavia Pennetta

Flavia Pennetta wrote the cleanest ending in modern tennis. At the 2015 US Open, seeded twenty-sixth and aged 33, she beat Roberta Vinci 7-6(4), 6-2 in the first all-Italian Grand Slam final, one day after Vinci had stopped Serena Williams's bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam. No woman had ever won her first major after turning 30. Then, with the trophy in hand, she told the Arthur Ashe crowd she was retiring, and by late October, after the WTA Finals, she was gone.

The title crowned a career of Italian firsts. In August 2009 she became the first Italian woman ranked in the singles top 10, and her career-high of No. 6 arrived only after New York, right at the end. In doubles she went further still: the first Italian at world No. 1, in February 2011, weeks after winning that year's Australian Open with Gisela Dulko. She won four Fed Cups with Italy, left with 1 major among 11 career titles, and married Fabio Fognini in June 2016.
