Victoria Azarenka

You heard Victoria Azarenka before you saw her. The grunt arrived a beat ahead of the ball, and behind it came a Belarusian who took the racket back early and hit through the court from the first stroke, giving opponents no time to think. In 2012 it carried her to the top: she won the Australian Open, became the first player from Belarus to take a major singles title, and rose to world No. 1 on 30 January. She defended the crown in Melbourne a year later, back-to-back Australian Opens, 2 in all, and finished 2012 as the year-end No. 1.

The wall she never cleared was Serena Williams, who beat her in the US Open finals of 2012 and 2013; a third final in New York, in 2020, slipped away too. Her duels with Maria Sharapova were among the loudest on tour. She left to have her son Leo in 2016 and came back a mother, still swinging, still a threat at the majors. She competes as a neutral athlete, her 21 career titles the record of a player who only knew one speed: forward.
