Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was already a name in 2006, junior world No. 1 at fourteen after sweeping the Australian and US Open junior titles. The senior tour took far longer to hand her a big final: it came at Roland Garros in 2021, on her 52nd Grand Slam main draw, a longer wait than any woman before her. She beat Tamara Zidansek to get there, then lost the final to Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, and rose to a career-high world No. 11 that November.
A knee injury wiped out most of 2022 and needed surgery, and the comeback was slow enough that she was briefly the lowest-ranked woman ever to reach a Roland Garros quarterfinal. She reached the Australian Open quarterfinals in January 2025, then a Lyme disease diagnosis left her bedridden mid-season. Five months later she was back in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, her first there in nine years. Her 12 career titles span more than fifteen years on tour, and at thirty-five the story is still open.
