Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki reached world No. 1 in October 2010 at 20, before she had won a major, and spent 71 weeks there under that question. Two US Open finals slipped away, to Kim Clijsters in 2009 and Serena Williams in 2014. The answer came at the 2018 Australian Open: 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 over Simona Halep in a sweltering final, and a return to No. 1 the same night, six years after losing it. The game was built on legs: relentless retrieving and the patience to outlast anyone.
Later that year she revealed a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and played on, saying goodbye at the 2020 Australian Open at 29. It did not hold. In 2023 she returned as a mother of two and reached the US Open fourth round within weeks, taking a set off eventual champion Coco Gauff, then made the second week in New York again in 2024. She has not played since, welcoming a third child in 2025, her ledger settled at 1 major and 30 career titles.
