Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic won Olympic singles gold in Tokyo in 2021, beating Marketa Vondrousova over three sets, then added doubles silver in the same week, the first Swiss woman to top an Olympic singles podium. The talent had been flagged early: junior world No. 1 at sixteen, two junior Grand Slam titles in 2013, and a game built on taking the ball early and beating power with timing. The senior peaks followed, a US Open semi-final in 2019 and a career-high No. 4 in February 2020.

Then the story turned. Her daughter Bella arrived in April 2024, and Bencic returned that October with no ranking at all. Within a year she had won Abu Dhabi, her first title as a mother, and reached the 2025 Wimbledon semi-finals, stopped only by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She opened 2026 unbeaten in singles at the United Cup, MVP of the event with a comeback win over Swiatek, and re-entered the top 10, the first mother to do so since Serena Williams in 2019.
