Diana Shnaider

Diana Shnaider took the road top prospects almost never take. Fresh off her Grand Slam debut at the 2023 Australian Open, she enrolled at NC State, won ACC Freshman of the Year and carried the Wolfpack to an NCAA final, then left college after one season to turn fully professional. Born in April 2004, she is a left-hander with a flat, fast two-handed backhand and no patience for long rallies. She has 5 career titles, four of them collected in 2024 alone, and reached a career-high No. 11 in May 2025.

Paris keeps giving her the biggest moments. At the 2024 Olympics she took doubles silver with Mirra Andreeva, and at Roland Garros in 2026 she produced her defining match: down 6-3, 4-1 to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals, she won twelve of the last thirteen games to reach her first major semi-final at 22. The run ended against qualifier Maja Chwalinska, but the direction of travel is set.

Chwalinska, a point from a Wimbledon win, turned her ankle and lost

One point. That is how close Maja Chwalinska came to a first-round win at Wimbledon, a month after she reached the Roland Garros final, before her ankle gave way and the match turned. Mananchaya Sawangkaew, the world No. 164 from Thailand, came back to win 2-6 7-5 6-2.
