Dominika Cibulkova

Dominika Cibulkova stood 161 cm, one of the smallest players on tour, and hit like she was twice the size, launching herself into forehands and celebrating big points with a fist pump and a shout of "Pome!", Slovak for come on. Melbourne 2014 was the breakthrough: wins over Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep carried her to the Australian Open final, the first by a Slovak woman, before Li Na stopped her 7-6(3), 6-0.

The defining week came at the 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore. She arrived as the eighth and last qualifier, lost two of her three round-robin matches, and still left with the biggest of her 8 career titles, beating world No. 1 Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Five months later she stood at a career-high No. 4.
