Slovak tennis, a short history
2 Grand Slam finals mark the high point of the Slovak men's game, both reached by Miloslav Mecir at the 1986 US Open and the 1989 Australian Open. Mecir, who won 12 tour titles, also took Olympic singles gold at Seoul 1988, competing for Czechoslovakia. Dominik Hrbaty and Karol Kucera each won 7 titles and reached a Slam semi-final, Hrbaty at Roland Garros 1999 and Kucera at the Australian Open 1998.
1 Grand Slam final stands out for the women: Dominika Cibulkova at the 2014 Australian Open. The Pocket Rocket capped her career by winning the 2016 WTA Finals, beating world number one Angelique Kerber. Daniela Hantuchova, a 2008 Australian Open semi-finalist, anchored Slovakia's 2002 Fed Cup title, while Henrieta Nagyova (9 titles), Magdalena Rybarikova (Wimbledon 2017 semi-final) and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova built on that depth.
