Miloslav Mecir

They called him the Big Cat for the way he moved, gliding to the ball with no apparent hurry; the French preferred the Conjuror. Miloslav Mecir's flat, disguised hitting unsettled a generation, Swedes above all: four of his five most frequent opponents were Swedish, and his run to the 1986 US Open final went through Boris Becker and Joakim Nystrom. Ivan Lendl stopped him there and again in the 1989 Australian Open final, hitting deep down the middle to deny the angles Mecir lived on.

Seoul 1988 crowned it. Weeks after losing the Wimbledon semifinal to Stefan Edberg from two sets up, he beat Edberg in five to reach the Olympic final, then Tim Mayotte for Czechoslovakia's singles gold. He reached No. 4 in February 1988, and his 12 career titles include the 1987 WCT Finals, taken off John McEnroe. A worsening back injury ended it in July 1990, at 26.
