Yannick Noah

Arthur Ashe found him at eleven in Cameroon and helped point him toward France. Twelve years later Yannick Noah attacked the Roland Garros clay behind his serve, all legs and flying volleys, and beat the defending champion Mats Wilander 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 in the 1983 final for his 1 major; his father Zacharie leapt from the stands to hug him. Forty-three years on, no French man has won it since. He rose to No. 3 in singles in July 1986, topped the doubles ranking that August, and collected 23 career titles.

The second act belonged to France too. As Davis Cup captain he ended a 59-year wait in Lyon in 1991, grabbing a microphone to sing Saga Africa, his own summer hit, with his players on court; he won the cup again in 1996 and steered the women to a first Fed Cup title in 1997. By then he was a platinum-selling singer in France, as much at home on stage as he had been diving across Chatrier.
