Mats Wilander

Nobody saw Mats Wilander coming at Roland Garros in 1982. Unseeded, 17 years and 9 months old, on his main-draw debut, he went through Ivan Lendl, Vitas Gerulaitis, Jose Luis Clerc and Guillermo Vilas in a row, and asked to replay match point in the semi-final because a call had wronged Clerc. The youngest male major champion yet, he built from there: his 7 Grand Slam titles split three Roland Garros, three Australian Opens and one US Open, two of the Australian wins on Kooyong grass.

1988 was the summit: the Australian, French and US Opens in one season, closed with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Lendl in New York, 4 hours 54 minutes, for No. 1. Then the hunger went. He held the top spot for just 20 weeks, and by the end of 1990 he had slid to No. 41, 34 career titles already banked. Wimbledon stayed the gap: three quarter-finals and never a step further, the one major his patient game never cracked.
