Ivan Lendl

No one had beaten John McEnroe all year when Ivan Lendl faced him in the 1984 Roland Garros final, and after two sets nothing suggested anyone would. Lendl kept looping the ball, kept running, and won 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5, a first major at the fifth final after four defeats. The wall broke. His 8 Grand Slam titles run three at Roland Garros, three at the US Open and two Australian Opens, inside a record eight straight US Open finals from 1982 to 1989.

Lendl made preparation the point. Scheduled fitness blocks, a rebuilt diet, blood tests and daily conditioning, a proto-professional regime the modern tour later adopted wholesale, and it carried him to 270 weeks at No. 1 and 95 career titles. Wimbledon stayed out of reach: two finals, seven semi-finals, even a skipped 1990 Roland Garros to practise on grass. He settled the account as a coach, steering Andy Murray to the 2012 US Open and, in 2013, Britain's first Wimbledon men's title in 77 years.
