Michael Chang

Nobody has won a men's Grand Slam title younger, and nobody has won one on emptier legs. At Roland Garros in 1989, aged 17 years and 109 days, Michael Chang took out world No. 1 Ivan Lendl in the fourth round from two sets down, cramping so badly he could barely push off, floating in an underarm serve and, on match point, stepping up to the service line to receive. Lendl double-faulted. In the final he outlasted Stefan Edberg in five sets, then credited his faith before he credited himself.

He never added a second: the count stopped at 1 major, with finals lost to Thomas Muster in Paris in 1995 and to Boris Becker and Pete Sampras in 1996, the year he peaked at No. 2. The legs still banked 35 career titles, most of them run down rather than served out. In retirement he coached Kei Nishikori from 2014 to 2025, steering him to the 2014 US Open final, and now guides Learner Tien.
