Svetlana Kuznetsova

She came from cycling royalty: her father, Aleksandr Kuznetsov, coached Olympic track champions, and her mother, Galina Tsareva, set twenty world records on the bike. Svetlana Kuznetsova put the family engine into tennis, left St Petersburg for Barcelona as a teenager, and at 19 won the 2004 US Open, beating Elena Dementieva 6-3, 7-5 in an all-Russian final, the first Russian woman to take that title.

Justine Henin stopped her in both major finals she lost, Roland Garros 2006 and the US Open 2007, the week she reached her career-high No. 2. Paris paid her back in 2009: she dismantled world No. 1 Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-2, another all-Russian final, for the second of her 2 majors. She loved the long way round; her 2011 Australian Open duel with Francesca Schiavone ran four hours, 44 minutes, the longest women's Grand Slam match on record. Her 18 career titles stretch from Helsinki 2002 to Washington 2018, and she never formally retired: her last match was Wimbledon 2021, the goodbye left unsaid.
