Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty quit tennis before she mastered it. Burnt out at 18, she left the tour after the 2014 US Open and spent the break playing professional cricket for the Brisbane Heat. She returned in February 2016 with the craftiest game of her era, a kicking serve and a skidding slice backhand that dismantled bigger hitters. Roland Garros 2019 brought the first major, a 6-1, 6-3 final over Marketa Vondrousova, and by June she was world No. 1.

Her 3 majors came on three surfaces, and she never lost a slam final. She won Wimbledon 2021 over Karolina Pliskova in a scallop-hemmed dress honouring Evonne Goolagong, fifty years after her idol's first title there, then took the 2022 Australian Open from Danielle Collins, recovering from 5-1 down in the second set to become the first home singles champion in 44 years. Two months later, a proud Ngarigo woman with 15 career titles and 121 weeks at world No. 1 behind her, she retired at 25, still on top.
