Garbine Muguruza

Born in Caracas in 1993 to a Basque father and a Venezuelan mother, and raised in Spain from age six, Garbine Muguruza hit flatter and earlier than almost anyone of her era, first strike or nothing. At her best nobody was safe: she beat Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the 2016 Roland Garros final, then Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0 at Wimbledon a year later, and remains the only player to defeat both sisters in Grand Slam finals. In September 2017 she reached world No. 1 and held it for four weeks.

The lows arrived as fast as the highs, with lost finals at Wimbledon in 2015 and the Australian Open in 2020 and drifting seasons in between. Her last great fortnight came in November 2021, beating Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 7-5 in Mexico to become the first Spaniard to win the WTA Finals. She played her last match in January 2023 and made retirement official in April 2024, at 30, with 2 majors among 10 career titles.
