Jie Zheng
Zheng Jie arrived at the 2008 Wimbledon as a wildcard ranked 133rd in the world and left as the first Chinese woman to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal. She beat top seed and world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in the third round, the lowest ranked player ever to topple a Wimbledon top seed, then lost to Serena Williams in a tight two setter. She gave her prize money to relief efforts after the Sichuan earthquake, which had struck weeks earlier.
That run was not her first trip into the history books. Two years earlier she and Yan Zi had won the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles titles, China's first Grand Slam championships in any discipline. Zheng reached a second major singles semifinal at the 2010 Australian Open, losing to Justine Henin, and climbed to a career-high world No. 15 in 2009. She retired in 2015 with 4 career titles, a name that belongs beside Na Li's at the start of Chinese tennis's rise.
