Kiki Bertens
Kiki Bertens was ranked 89th when Roland Garros 2016 began and had never been past a tour quarter-final. She beat Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys on the way to the semi-finals, the first Dutch woman there in 45 years, then pushed Serena Williams close on a strained calf before losing in two tight sets. The heavy topspin forehand and kick serve that carried her that fortnight became her trademarks.
Two years later she rebuilt her game for hard courts and beat Simona Halep from a set and a championship point down to win Cincinnati in 2018. Madrid followed in May 2019, a final win over Halep without dropping a set, and with it a career-high ranking of world No. 4, the highest any Dutch woman has reached. An achilles injury that needed surgery in 2020 never fully cleared, and Bertens retired in 2021 at 29, closing out 10 career titles at the Tokyo Olympics.
