Lucie Safarova

Lucie Safarova's 2015 was the peak and the hinge. That June the left-hander from Brno reached the French Open final, pushing Serena Williams to three sets before losing 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2, and by September she was world No. 5. Then a bacterial infection put her in hospital that autumn and bled into the following season; she never climbed that high again, though the level had been real since a Wimbledon semi-final in 2014, lost to fellow Czech Petra Kvitova.

The doubles side needs no such caveat. With Bethanie Mattek-Sands she formed Team Bucie, winners of five Grand Slam titles between 2015 and 2017, two in Melbourne, two in Paris, one in New York, and in August 2017 she became doubles world No. 1. Add five Fed Cup titles with the Czech team and 7 career titles in singles. The goodbye came at Roland Garros in 2019: Mattek-Sands's knee failed days before the event, so Dominika Cibulkova stepped in for one final doubles match, and Safarova walked away at 32.
