Jennifer Capriati

Jennifer Capriati was a tour finalist at thirteen, a Roland Garros semi-finalist at fourteen in 1990, and Olympic champion at sixteen, coming from a set down to beat Steffi Graf in Barcelona. The spiral that followed is part of the story: a shoplifting charge in 1993, a marijuana arrest in 1994, and more than a year away from a game that had asked too much of a teenager.

The comeback arrived all at once. Seeded twelfth at the 2001 Australian Open, she beat Martina Hingis for a first major, outlasted Kim Clijsters 12-10 in the third set of the Roland Garros final, and was world No. 1 by October. Melbourne 2002 was the summit: a set and 4-0 down to Hingis in 35-degree heat, she saved four championship points to win the last of her 3 majors, two in Melbourne and one in Paris. Injuries ended it in 2004, 14 career titles and 17 weeks at No. 1 behind her, and the Hall of Fame called in 2012.
