Mary Pierce

Mary Pierce hit the ball as hard as anyone of her generation, flat, early and ballistic off both wings. Born in Montreal to an American father and a French mother, she chose France, and her early career unfolded in the shadow of her father Jim, whose abusive courtside outbursts got him banned from WTA events in 1993. Free of that turbulence she played her cleanest tennis: after losing the 1994 Roland Garros final to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, she routed the same opponent 6-3, 6-2 for the 1995 Australian Open title, the first of her 2 majors.

The second was the one France waited for. At Roland Garros in 2000 she beat Conchita Martinez 6-2, 7-5, the first Frenchwoman to win the home slam since Francoise Durr in 1967, and still the last. Then, at 30, came a resurgence: finals at Roland Garros and the US Open in 2005 and at the Tour Championships, before a ruptured knee ligament at Linz in 2006 ended her career with 18 career titles.
