Anastasia Myskina

A match point down to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round, Anastasia Myskina looked finished at Roland Garros 2004. She escaped 1-6, 6-4, 8-6, beat Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati, then took the first all-Russian Grand Slam final 6-1, 6-2 from Elena Dementieva. The Muscovite was the first Russian woman to win a major singles title, and the dam broke behind her: Maria Sharapova took Wimbledon, Kuznetsova the US Open, three of the season's four majors to Russian women. That September Myskina reached world No. 2.

She was just as decisive for her country. In the 2004 Fed Cup final against France she won all three matches without dropping a set, two singles and the clinching doubles with Vera Zvonareva, to hand Russia its first title. The peak was brief: injuries wore her down, she played two singles matches in 2007 and never came back, her 10 career titles banked. She returned as Russia's Fed Cup captain from 2014 to 2018, steering the team to another final in 2015.
