Timea Bacsinszky
Timea Bacsinszky's father Igor, a Transylvanian coach who had fled to Switzerland, built her game and then broke her taste for it. In 2011, worn down by injury and by him, she semi-retired from the tour, worked restaurant shifts and enrolled in hotel management school, ready to leave tennis behind for good. An email inviting her into 2013 Roland Garros qualifying pulled her back, on her own terms this time, with a new coach in her corner and no father in the box.
The comeback peaked at Roland Garros. In 2015 she led Serena Williams by a set and a break in the semifinal before losing the last ten games, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Two years later, on a French Open day that was also her birthday, she met Jelena Ostapenko, who turned twenty that same afternoon, and fell 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3. She reached world No. 9 in May 2016, retired in July 2021, and closed her career with 4 titles.
