Marion Bartoli

Marion Bartoli hit everything with two hands, a technique her father Walter, a doctor who gave up medicine to coach her, copied from Monica Seles after watching the 1992 Roland Garros final. The rest of the game was just as homemade: shadow swings between points, restless bouncing at the baseline, practice drills built around juggling. It worked sooner than anyone expected. At Wimbledon 2007 she beat world No. 1 Justine Henin in the semifinals before Venus Williams stopped her in the final.

Wimbledon owed her a second chance and she took it whole. In 2013, on her forty-seventh Grand Slam appearance, then a record wait for a first major, she won the title without dropping a set, finishing 6-1, 6-4 over Sabine Lisicki. Forty days later she stood in Cincinnati and retired at 28, the body simply done after years of pain. She left with a career-high ranking of No. 7 and 1 major among 8 career titles, a champion entirely of her own design.
