Iva Majoli

Only one player beat Martina Hingis at a major in 1997, and it happened in Paris. Seeded ninth at Roland Garros, the 19-year-old Iva Majoli got past Monica Seles 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinal, then dismantled the 16-year-old world No. 1 Martina Hingis 6-4, 6-2 in the final, ending an unbeaten start to the season and the bid for a calendar Grand Slam. It made her the first Croatian to win a singles major, and that 1 Roland Garros title remained her only one.

Majoli left Zagreb for Nick Bollettieri's Florida academy in 1990 and turned professional at fourteen, an aggressive baseliner built around a two-handed backhand that hurt most on clay. By February 1996 she was world No. 4, still eighteen. She collected 8 career titles before shoulder trouble forced retirement in 2004, at 26. In 2012 she returned to the Croatian game as captain of the national Fed Cup team.
