Regina Marsikova

Regina Marsikova won back to back Canadian Open titles in the late 1970s, beating Marise Kruger in 1977 and then Virginia Ruzici in three sets in 1978. Those weeks bookended her best run at the majors: three straight Roland Garros semifinals from 1977 to 1979, each one ending short of the final. She had already won the Roland Garros doubles title in 1977 with Pam Teeguarden, and reached No. 11 in the world in August 1981, the peak of a career built on clay and a one-handed backhand.

She was part of the Czechoslovak team that beat the United States to win the 1985 Fed Cup, drafted into the doubles once the tie was already decided. By then her career had already survived one detour. A car accident near Prague in September 1981 killed a person and cost her her driver's licence, a suspended sentence followed, and she was barred from leaving the Eastern Bloc until early 1985. She returned to the tour, closed out 16 career titles, and retired in 1993.
