Djokovic passes Federer’s Wimbledon win record, into the quarter-finals

106. That is how many singles matches Novak Djokovic has now won at Wimbledon, one more than Roger Federer’s 105, the record he tied in the previous round and passed today by beating the qualifier Roman Safiullin 7-6(6) 6-3 3-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

On paper this was a mismatch: the No. 7 seed against a 131st-ranked opponent who had come through qualifying. On grass it took four sets. Safiullin pushed the opening set to a tiebreak before Djokovic edged it 8-6, then closed the second 6-3 to lead by two sets.

Safiullin would not fold. He took the third set 6-3, the only set Djokovic lost all afternoon, and had break points to push deeper into the fourth. Djokovic saved 10 of the 14 break points he faced across the match, converted 5 of his own, and won the total-points count 124-114 on his way to closing out the fourth set 6-3.

The tally leaves out a walkover, Alex De Minaur’s withdrawal before their 2024 quarter-final, which does not count. Jimmy Connors sits a distant third with 84 wins. Djokovic’s Wimbledon story began the hard way too, with three qualifying wins in 2005 over Brian Baker, Jimmy Wang and Wesley Moodie, before he went on to win the title itself seven times, in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. He next plays for a place in the semi-finals.
