Kevin Curren

No one served bigger through the game's shift from wood to graphite than Kevin Curren, and never bigger than at Wimbledon in 1985. The eighth seed dismantled top seed John McEnroe 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, then hit 17 aces past Jimmy Connors in a 72-minute, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 semifinal. In the final the most feared server of the fortnight ran into an unseeded 17-year-old named Boris Becker, who out-hit him 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 to become Wimbledon's youngest men's champion.

Born in Durban, Curren won the 1979 NCAA singles title for Texas and had already served 33 aces past defending champion Connors en route to the 1983 Wimbledon semifinals. At the 1984 Australian Open he took the first set of the final off Mats Wilander on Kooyong grass before losing in four. An American citizen from April 1985, he reached his career-high No. 5 that July and retired with 5 career titles, two major finals reached and neither won.
