Raul Ramirez

In November 1976, Raul Ramirez reached No. 4 in the world in singles while sitting at No. 1 in doubles, the first man to finish a season on top of both Grand Prix points races at once. The singles peak brought three Grand Slam semifinals, Roland Garros in 1976 and 1977 and Wimbledon in 1976, but the deeper mark was in doubles, where he and Brian Gottfried took Roland Garros in 1975 and 1977 and Wimbledon in 1976 as one of the era's most durable pairings.

He made his name for Mexico away from the majors too. In December 1975, with the Davis Cup tie against the United States level at two matches each in Mexico City, Ramirez beat Jimmy Connors in a match spread over two days, dropping the first set before taking the next three. It sent Mexico past the Americans for a second straight year, still the country's signature tennis result. Ramirez retired in 1983 with 20 career titles and the strongest claim to being Mexico's greatest player.
