Brian Teacher

Brian Teacher nearly missed his own Grand Slam. Beaten in the Sydney final in December 1980, he phoned home, learned his wife wanted a divorce, and withdrew from the Australian Open; tournament director Colin Stubbs quietly slipped him back into the draw when another player pulled out. The eighth seed then went through the field, beating Kim Warwick, who had just ended Guillermo Vilas's two-year reign, 7-5, 7-6, 6-3 in the Kooyong final on 4 January 1981.

The December Open was the slam the biggest names routinely skipped, but Teacher's fortnight held up: it carried him to a career-high No. 7 in May 1981, the peak of a career built on a huge serve and fast courts, the game he had honed at UCLA on NCAA champion teams in 1975 and 1976. He retired in 1986 with 1 major among 8 career titles, then coached for decades, Andre Agassi and Greg Rusedski among his players.
