Henri Leconte

Henri Leconte hit the ball flat, early and left-handed, and played to the crowd between points; no Frenchman of his era was more fun to watch. He reached world No. 5 in September 1986, the year he made semifinals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and collected 10 career titles. His one major final came in Paris in 1988, where Mats Wilander dismantled him 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.

Back surgery in the summer of 1991 dropped him to No. 159 and the career looked over. Captain Yannick Noah picked him for the Davis Cup final against the United States anyway, and in Lyon that November Leconte produced the week of his life: a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 rout of Pete Sampras, then the doubles win with Guy Forget that set up France's first cup since 1932. "I was like a painter with his brush," he said. A third Roland Garros semifinal followed in 1992; he retired in 1996 and has been entertaining crowds on the seniors circuit and French television since.
