Mikael Pernfors

Mikael Pernfors arrived at the 1986 French Open unseeded and left as the story of the fortnight. Fresh off back to back NCAA singles titles at Georgia, the first man to do that since 1964, he beat Stefan Edberg, Robert Seguso, Boris Becker and Henri Leconte in succession before Ivan Lendl shut him out in the final. He was 22. The run carried him to a career-high No. 10 that September, and the lobs and drop shots he mixed in made him one of the tour's most watchable players.

A year later at Wimbledon, he led Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1, 4-1, then went up 3-0 in the fourth set before Connors, then 34, produced one of the great escapes to win in five. Pernfors took the loss with the same shrug he brought to press conferences, and the wit outlasted the result. His comeback came at 30 in 1993, ranked No. 58 and barely inside the draw at Montreal, where he beat Todd Martin for the last of his 3 career titles.
