Hana Mandlikova

Watching Hana Mandlikova at full flow meant watching one of the most naturally gifted players of her era: grace, speed and anticipation, an approach shot from anywhere, no defensive gear at all. Her 4 Grand Slam titles split two Australian Opens, one Roland Garros and one US Open, and the last was the masterpiece. At the 1985 US Open she beat Chris Evert in the semifinals and Martina Navratilova 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 in the final, the first player since Tracy Austin to beat both in the same tournament.

The catch was the era. Evert and Navratilova owned the decade, and Mandlikova, brilliant but streaky, peaked at world No. 3 in 1984 and lost four more major finals, two of them at Wimbledon. Born in Prague, she took Australian citizenship in 1988 and retired in 1990 at 28 with 27 career titles. She then coached Jana Novotna for nine years, steering her to the 1998 Wimbledon crown, delivering as a coach the one title she never won as a player.

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
