Ecuadorian tennis, a short history
1 Grand Slam title defines the men's story. Andres Gomez won Roland Garros in 1990, beating Andre Agassi in the final, the only Ecuadorian to take a singles major. He gathered 21 tour titles in all and rose to a career high of world No. 4. Nicolas Lapentti carried the next generation, reaching the 1999 Australian Open semifinals on the way to a career high of world No. 6, with 5 tour titles to his name. Pancho Guzman adds a further title to the count.
The women's heritage runs through Maria Eugenia Guzman, who collected 7 tour titles, the most of any Ecuadorian woman in our records. A major run has yet to follow.
