Steve Denton

Steve Denton's biggest weapon outlived his career: in 1984 the Texan cracked a 138 mph serve, a world record that stood for thirteen years. It came from an unorthodox, whip-fast motion built on the hard courts of Kingsville, Texas, and it carried him to the one stage where the sport's biggest names mostly stayed home. The December Australian Open on Kooyong grass gave him back-to-back finals, and both times Johan Kriek was waiting: a four-set defeat in 1981, then a straight-sets repeat in 1982.

Denton's serve travelled better in doubles. With college teammate Kevin Curren he won the 1982 US Open title, outlasting Victor Amaya and Hank Pfister in five sets. He reached No. 12 in singles and No. 2 in doubles in 1983, closing a nine-year tour career with 0 career titles and no major singles final won. Since 2006 he has coached Texas A&M's men, turning the serve into a teaching tool and the program into a national contender.
