Tracy Austin

The pigtailed 16-year-old who beat Chris Evert 6-4, 6-3 in the 1979 US Open final is still the youngest champion in the event's history, and the win ended Evert's 31-match streak at Flushing Meadows. Austin's game was a metronome: patient, flat, anchored by a two-handed backhand down the line. By April 1980 she was No. 1 at 17, the youngest the rankings had then seen, and that year she and brother John became the first brother-and-sister pair to win a major, Wimbledon's mixed doubles.

The 1981 US Open final was the sharpest of her 2 majors, both won in New York: a set down to Martina Navratilova, she took the first Grand Slam final settled by a deciding-set tiebreak. Back trouble from 1983 kept her off the tour for four years, and a car accident in August 1989 shattered a knee and ended the comebacks; a last return closed in 1994, 33 career titles behind her. The Hall of Fame called in 1992, at 29 still its youngest inductee.

The family business: Cruz Hewitt debuts where his father won, and he is far from the only one

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
