Zina Garrison

Wimbledon 1990: Zina Garrison beat Monica Seles 9-7 in the third set, then took out the defending champion Steffi Graf in the semifinals, ending Graf's run of thirteen straight Grand Slam finals. That made her the first Black woman to reach a major singles final since Althea Gibson in 1958. Martina Navratilova, her most frequent opponent, won the final 6-4, 6-1 for a record ninth title, but the fortnight belonged to the serve-and-volleyer from Houston's public parks.

John Wilkerson's free program at MacGregor Park built that attacking game, which brought 16 career titles, a career-high No. 4 in 1989, three mixed doubles majors, and 1988 Olympic doubles gold with Pam Shriver alongside singles bronze. After retiring in 1996 she captained the US Fed Cup team and coached the American women at the Athens and Beijing Olympics, and her Houston academy gives inner-city kids the same start. She went public about her struggle with bulimia and has been a plainspoken advocate on eating disorders since.
