Kathy Jordan

Wimbledon, third round, 1983: Kathy Jordan beat Chris Evert 6-1, 7-6, the first player to stop her before a Grand Slam semifinal since Evert's major debut in 1971, a run of 34 straight tournaments. The All England Club had turned down Evert's request to push the match back while she recovered from food poisoning. Jordan carried the form to the Australian Open final that same year, where Martina Navratilova beat her 6-2, 7-6. A second major semifinal followed at Wimbledon in 1984, and that March she reached a career-high world No. 5.

Singles alone undersells her. A serve-volleyer out of Stanford, where she won the 1979 collegiate doubles with her sister Barbara Jordan, she built a doubles resume that outran her ranking: four majors alongside Anne Smith, a full career Grand Slam as a pair, plus Wimbledon 1985 with Elizabeth Smylie for a fifth. Mixed doubles brought two more with Ken Flach in 1986. Across singles, doubles and mixed she finished with 2 career titles.
