Russian tennis, a short history

Russia's men have two Grand Slam champions from the 1990s and 2000s. Yevgeny Kafelnikov won Roland Garros 1996 and the Australian Open 1999, and Marat Safin took the US Open 2000 and the Australian Open 2005. Daniil Medvedev added the US Open 2021, reached five more finals, and topped the rankings in 2022. Further back, Alex Metreveli was a Wimbledon finalist in 1973.

Russia's women have led the way. Maria Sharapova won five majors, including both Roland Garros titles of 2012 and 2014, with 36 tour titles in all. Svetlana Kuznetsova won the US Open 2004 and Roland Garros 2009. Elena Dementieva reached both 2004 finals, and Vera Zvonareva made the Wimbledon and US Open finals of 2010.
