Adriano Panatta

Eleven match points down to Kim Warwick in his opening match in Rome in 1976, Adriano Panatta saved them all, then won the title. Three weeks later he claimed his 1 major at Roland Garros, closing out Harold Solomon in a fourth-set tiebreak after beating Bjorn Borg in the quarterfinal. No other man ever beat Borg in Paris; Panatta did it twice, having also stopped him there in 1973. That December he won two singles and the doubles as Italy lifted its first Davis Cup in Santiago, where he talked Paolo Bertolucci into wearing red shirts in Pinochet's Chile.

The son of the caretaker at Rome's Tennis Club Parioli, born in 1950, Panatta learned on the club's clay and never played it conventionally: serve and volley, drop shots, improvisation on the slowest surface. He reached world No. 4 in August 1976 and gathered 11 career titles. After retiring he captained Italy's Davis Cup team, directed the Rome tournament, raced rally cars and speedboats, and runs a tennis club in Treviso.
