Bouzkova wins Nottingham for a first grass title, on a Czech day

Two. On the same day two Czech women won grass-court titles, and Marie Bouzkova’s was the first of her career: a 7-6(5) 4-6 6-2 win over Emma Navarro in Nottingham.

Bouzkova reached the final without dropping a set. She beat Tereza Valentova 6-3 6-3, Hannah Klugman 7-5 6-2, the grass-court specialist Tatjana Maria 7-5 6-0 and Karolina Pliskova 6-4 6-1, four straight-set wins to the final.

Navarro, the world No 25, made her work for it. The American took the middle set 6-4, the only set Bouzkova lost all week, before Bouzkova settled the decider 6-2. It is her fourth WTA title and her first on grass; the previous three came on hard courts and clay.

The Czech day was completed a few hours later when Linda Noskova won Berlin. The two have history: it was Bouzkova who beat Noskova in last year’s Prague final, and on Sunday they ended up champions on the same afternoon.
