Six championship points: Nosková survives her own collapse to win Wimbledon at 21

Six. That is how many championship points Linda Nosková needed to win Wimbledon. The first five came and went in the second set, along with a 5-2 lead and then the set itself, before the 21-year-old reset and beat Karolína Muchová 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 for her first Grand Slam title, in her first Grand Slam final.

For a set it was one-way traffic. Nosková broke for 3-1, broke again to close it, and took the opener 6-2 in the manner of the heavier hitter she was all afternoon: she finished with 44 winners to Muchová's 35 and ten aces to six. The second set stayed with her serve too, a break for 4-2, and at 5-2 the match looked over.

Then came the longest half hour of Nosková's career. Muchová served at 2-5 and saved three championship points from deuce. Nosková served for the title at 5-3, earned a fourth, and lost a marathon game in which Muchová kept coming back for break point after break point until the sixth one landed. A fifth championship point arrived on Muchová's serve at 4-5; saved again. From 2-5 Muchová won five straight games, breaking once more at 5-5 and serving the set out 7-5. Five championship points gone, and the player who had saved a match point against Coco Gauff in the semi-final was rolling.

What decides a final is what happened next. In the opening game of the third set Muchová carved out three break points; Nosková saved all three, then broke serve at the first opportunity for 2-0 and saved another break point on the way to 3-0. The hitting that had built the first set came back, the wobble did not. At 5-3 she served for the championship a second time and made no drama of it, converting her sixth championship point.

The title is Nosková's first at a Grand Slam and the third of her career, three weeks after her second, on the grass of Berlin. At 21, in her first major final, she saved the hardest version of the test: winning the match you have already almost lost. For Karolína Muchová it is a second Grand Slam final lost, after Roland Garros 2023, and a crueler one; she saved five championship points and won the set they lived in, and it still was not enough. Their head-to-head stands at one apiece, and the pair may not be done meeting in the second week of majors.
