Sinner is out of the US Open, a draw he has been in every year since 2019

Nine. That is how many days are left before the US Open starts, and Jannik Sinner has pulled out of it. The world No. 1, champion in New York in 2024 and runner-up last year, leaves a draw with nobody named in his place yet.

He goes out as the world No. 1, on 13450 points and 44-3 for the season with six titles: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome and Wimbledon. At this tournament he has been in the draw every year since 2019, won the title in 2024 and lost last year's final to Carlos Alcaraz 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4. His last match was that Wimbledon final on 29 June, a four-set win over Alexander Zverev, 53 days ago. Sinner said on Friday that he needs more time to recover from a right knee issue.

No replacement has been named yet. Sinner is the sixth man out of this field, after Sebastian Korda, replaced by Aleksandar Vukic; Emilio Nava, by Benjamin Bonzi; Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, by Alexei Popyrin; Ethan Quinn, by Martin Damm; and Gabriel Diallo, by Yibing Wu. That leaves 109 names on the entry list, nine days before the main draw starts on 30 August.
