Cerundolo wins Queen’s, and it is Tommy Paul in the final again

Two. Both of Francisco Cerundolo’s grass-court titles have come in a final against the same man, Tommy Paul, and on Sunday at Queen’s he won the second 6-7(4) 6-4 6-3.

Cerundolo built his career on clay. Three of his four previous tour titles came on it, including Buenos Aires in February; the exception was Eastbourne in 2023, on grass, where he had beaten Paul for the first grass title of his life. Queen’s was earned the hard way, three-set wins over Aleksandar Kovacevic, Arthur Fery and Brandon Nakashima, with only Jenson Brooksby beaten in straight sets, 6-0 6-4, before the final.

The final followed the pattern of the week. Cerundolo lost the opening set in a tiebreak, then took the next two 6-4 6-3, with Paul saving four match points before the Argentine finally closed it out. Three years on from Eastbourne, a bigger event and the same final pairing produced the same winner.

Queen’s is an ATP 500, and the biggest title of Cerundolo’s career: his four earlier tour titles all came at ATP 250 level. For an Argentine raised on clay, the two best weeks of his life on grass have one thing in common, the man across the net.
