Musetti saves four match points on the way to the Lyon title
Four. That is how many match points Lorenzo Musetti saved against Flavio Cobolli in the Lyon semifinal, a set down, before he beat Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 in the final on Sunday for his third career tour title and his first since 2022.
Lorenzo Musetti won the final 6-3 6-4 on hard court without facing a break point. He broke Taylor Fritz once in each set, converted two of four break points, and held all ten of his service games. Fritz made 28 unforced errors to Musetti's 11, and Musetti won 70% of his second-serve points (14 of 20) to Fritz's 47% (8 of 17).
That scoreline hides the semifinal. Flavio Cobolli, ranked sixth, took the opening set 6-4. Musetti levelled it 6-2, then saved four match points in the third and won it 7-5. He had also needed three sets in the quarterfinal against Luca Van Assche, 7-6(5) 6-7(7) 6-4, with a tiebreak in each of the first two. By Sunday there was nothing close to that: Fritz, ranked 14th, had come through Pierre Hugues Herbert, Daniel Altmaier and Tommy Paul, and found no way into Musetti's service games.
The title is Musetti's third on tour, after Hamburg and Naples in 2022, so it is his first since 2022. It came after eight lost finals. It was also the eighth meeting between the two men, and Musetti now leads 5-3, having won the previous one, at the Australian Open in January 2026, 6-2 7-5 6-4. For Fritz, who won Washington earlier this season, it is a thirteenth lost final against thirteen tour titles.
