Fery, a wildcard, beats Dimitrov in five to reach a first Grand Slam quarter-final

10-7 in the deciding tiebreak. That is how Arthur Fery, a British wildcard ranked No. 114, finished off Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6(7) on Centre Court, and reached the first Grand Slam quarter-final of his career.

Fery took the opening set 7-5, then lost the thread as Dimitrov, a former world No. 3, claimed the second and third to move a set in front. A set from the exit, the wildcard found another level. He levelled the match in the fourth, carried the decider to a final-set tiebreak, the ten-point break Wimbledon plays at six games all, and won it 10-7. Dimitrov, pushed to five sets by Matteo Berrettini two days earlier, could not find the escape a second time.

The week has been built on comebacks. In the third round Fery came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs over five sets, and on Centre Court he did it again against a far more decorated opponent. A wildcard into the main draw and the home favourite, he has turned the best Grand Slam run of his career into a place in the last eight.
