First tour titles for Davidovich Fokina and Bergs, on the same weekend

Seven. That is how many tour-level finals Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Zizou Bergs had lost between them without ever winning one. On the same weekend before Wimbledon, both finally broke through: Davidovich Fokina in Mallorca, Bergs in Eastbourne, each a first tour title of his career.

Davidovich Fokina had waited the longest, and most publicly. He lost the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters final to Stefanos Tsitsipas, then four more across 2025: Delray Beach to Miomir Kecmanovic, Acapulco to Tomas Machac, Washington to Alex De Minaur and Basel to Joao Fonseca. Five tour finals, five defeats, with his only previous titles coming at Challenger level in 2019. In Mallorca he beat Adam Walton 6-4 7-5 and Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-3, came from a set down past Fabian Marozsan 5-7 6-2 6-4, and closed out Ethan Quinn 7-6(4) 6-3. The breakthrough came on grass, where the Spaniard had never won a title of any kind and stood at 15 wins and 15 losses for his career.

Bergs had lost fewer finals but knew the feeling. His two tour finals both got away: Auckland in early 2025 to Gael Monfils, and ’s-Hertogenbosch last June, on grass, to Gabriel Diallo, on this same pre-Wimbledon swing a year ago. Eight of his titles had come on the Challenger tour, one of them on grass at Ilkley in 2022. In Eastbourne he beat Jaume Munar 6-2 6-4, advanced when Daniel Altmaier retired, beat Jan Choinski 6-3 6-3 and came through a three-set semi-final against Toby Samuel 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2. The final followed the week: a set down to Ugo Humbert, then 6-1 6-4.

The two have more in common than the timing. Davidovich Fokina and Bergs are both 27 and born two days apart in June 1999, and both won the first tour title of their careers on grass, on the same weekend, a week before the biggest grass tournament of all. Each travels to Wimbledon a tour champion for the first time.
